The most basic feature of charred grass is its linear structure. Stomata tend to be rectangular. Phytoliths are silica and always include elongated members. A variety of shorter silica phytoliths help identify the family or genera of the grass. Sub-ten-micrometer denticulate structures mark the long edges of epithelial cells. These are generally preserved through combustion by their silica coating. Silica cystolithic hairs are common. Some of these patterns are shared by all monocots and gymnosperms but the details in their structures distinguish them.
