Wear Metal Under the Microscope

Wear Metal

This is from an environmental tapelift collected in a school. Metal, being a conductive material, changes the polarization of the beam at the edge of the particle. As a result the particle has a bright halo when viewed with full crossed polars. As the polars are slightly off crossed the halo is first more difficult to see and then disappears completely.
