Significance in the Environment:
Birefringent setae are characteristics of the Trombidiformes and the Sarcoptiformes. The setae of Parasitiformes and Holothyroidea are
optically inactive. The optical activity was attributed to actinochitin by F. Grandjean (see Hughes p.6).
