Relative Refractive Index
The relative difference in refractive index between the particle and the
mounting medium can be seen in the "relief" of the particle. The Becke'
Line can be used to determine if the particle or the medium has the higher
refractive index. Oblique illumination shows the relative refractive
index, higher or lower, rapidly as the particles are scanned. Phase contrast
shows the relative refractive index by the shade of the particle
relative to the background.
