Relative Refractive Index

The relative difference in refractive index between the particle and the mounting medium can be seen in the "relief" of the particle. The Becke' Line can be used to determine if the particle or the medium has the higher refractive index. Oblique illumination shows the relative refractive index, higher or lower, rapidly as the particles are scanned. Phase contrast shows the relative refractive index by the shade of the particle relative to the background.
