Charred Leaf Fragments Through the Microscope

Charred Leaf Fragment

This is from a home impacted by a near approach of the Etiwanda fire. The Etiwanda fire was typical of a Southern California Chaparral fire. This fragment is from the epithelium of a deciduous leaf. The leaf has been thoroughly ashed but the cell island structure is still present and visible with transmitted light. With reflected Darkfield the structure is not visible due to surface light scatter.
