Charred Leaf Resin Through the Microscope

Charred Leaf Resin

This is from a home impacted by a near approach of the Etiwanda fire. The Etiwanda fire was typical of a Southern California Chaparral fire. These black spherical particles are common from the incomplete combustion of Red Shanks (Adenostoma sparsifolium)leaves. They come from the resin beads the exude from the leaves in hot dry weather.
