Degraded Paper Under the Microscope

Degraded Paper

This is a fragment of degraded paper insulation from transformer oil. The bond between the fibers is as strong or stronger than the forces holding the individual fibers together. The Degree of polymerization (DP) for these fibers is below 150. New paper typically has a DP greater than 1000.

Definition/Function:

Paper fragments are particles consisting of more than one paper fiber bound together. They are the result of chemically or mechanically degraded paper.

Significance in the Environment:

If paper fragments of this type are present at a significant level in a transformer oil sample then at some location in the transformer the paper insulation has lost all strength and has failed. The transformer may continue to function normally for some time but is a candidate for sudden failure due to the loss of insulation between windings at some point.
