Silica Sponge Spicule

Silica Sponge Spicule

This is from an environmental tapelift collected in a home near San Francisco Bay. The two sponge spicule fragments in this image can be identified by the hollow tube running down the length of the fragments. The inclusions in the tube indicate this is not fresh material. They may be from a filler in a construction material or from an organic insect control powder.
