Slag Abrasive Through the Microscope

Coal Slag Abrasive

This is from an environmental tapelift collected outside. The slag particle is the large particle in the upper right quadrent. The Black particle just left of center is a charred wood fragment. Coal slag abrasive may be very dark in appearance. The color of coal slag is normally dark as a result of the iron content in the glass. There may be mineral inclusions including magnetite in the abrasive.
