Transmitted Brightfield Illumination With Substage Iris Closed Down

This is one of the series on Illumination of fungae. Here the substage iris is closed down to
maximize image contrast. The visibility (contrast) is good and although the objects can be easily
seen, the resolution of detail is lost. The presence of some structures may be more obvious with
this form of illumination but it is especially important to understand that the optical effects
seen are often not reliable manifestations of the structure that gives rise to these effects.
