Aspergillus

Transmitted Oblique Illumination

This is one of the series on Illumination of fungae. Here the the illuminating beam is off axis with
respect to the optical path through the microscope. The result is a shadow effect that gives a 3D
appearance to the objects. The contrast is good with this technique and the resolution is enhanced along
one axis (at right angles to the beam) and decreased along the other (parallel to the beam). The depth
of field is also enhanced with this form of illumination.
