Singed Human Hair Through the Microscope

Burned Human Hair

This is an example of white (colorless) human hair exposed to an open flame. This is one of the early changes in the hair. Singed hair shows the effects of the initial steps in the Maillard reaction. The hair becomes brown and swells. Water is released forming steam which creates bubbles in the degrading hair.
