Forest Fire Debris Through the Microscope

Forest Fire Debris in a Home

This is a field of view from an environmental tapelift collected in a home exposed to smoke from a forest fire. The particle near the scales is a thermally modified calcium oxalate crystal from a burned pine needle. The circular structures with the black bar are starch grains. The black bar is the result of using transmitted slightly off crossed circular polarized light. The colorless flakes are human skin flakes. The large black particle at the center is charred pine wood. The black particle slightly below and right of center is a mold spore cluster. The granular clusters of small birefrigent crystals at top center and slightly above and left of center are ash particles.
