White Drain Line Pipe Charred in the Laboratory

This is an example of the ash left after burning a cross section of white drain line pipe in a muffle furnace. The white portion is fully burned and the black still retains a significant amount of carbon. The reddish area was dirt on the outside of the pipe. The iron in the dirt has been completely oxidized by the exposure to heat and oxygen. When only transmitted light is use they all appear black.
