Day Creek Actinolite Under the Microscope

Actinolite Sand Grain, Day Creek, Washington State

This is a actinolite sand grain from Day Creek that has been crushed and mounted in 1.620 high dispersion refractive index oil.

Transmitted Phase Contrast Dispersion Staining with a Single Linear Polarizing Filter

Definition/Function:

Day Creek is a creek in Skagit County Washington that empties into the Skagit River. Phase contrast dispersion staining is superior to objective stop dispersion staining for asbestos analysis because it has a shallower depth of field and can isolate asbestos in complex fields of view, the fibers remain in sharp focus with high resolution, and two colors are seen in each position so it is easier to bracket the refractive index match.

Significance in the Environment:

Sand from this creek was used in a driveway and resulted in the contamination of adjacent home interiors.
