Demodex Mite Under the Microscope

Demodex follicularum

This is a tapelift from the face of a man. This white cylindrical particle encases a dead Demodex mite. Portions of the mite can just barely be seen, such as sections of the leg. This is one mechanism the body has for removing the dead mites from the pores.

These mites inhabit the human skin, living in the hair follicles. A closely related species Demodex brevis, lives in the sebaceous glands rather than the hair follicles.
