Oblique Dispersion Staining
This is a collection of glass fiber that has a
refractive index of 1.550 in a high dispersion liquid with
a refractive index of 1.545.
Transmitted Oblique Brightfield Illumination
Definition/Function:
With oblique illumination one side of the particle shows the wavelenghts for which the
particle has the higher refractive index and the other side
shows the wavelengths for which the mounting medium has the higher refractive index. If
the refractive index of the particle and
the mounting medium match at some visible wavelength but the dispersion curve of the
mounting medium has a greater slope than that of the
particle then the wavelengths for which the particle has the higher refractive index
color one side of the particle and the wavelengths for which
the mouning medium has the higher refractive index colors the other side of the
particle.
