Interface Effects
A: Zircon crystals showing relief shading as a
function of the angle of the faces to the direct beam of light, the higher the angle
between the stage and the face, the darker grey for that face. B: Oblique Dispersion
Staining of three different optical glass standards, matching at 520 nanometers
(nm), 590 nm, and 1000 nm, and a quartz fragment, matching at greater than 1500 nm.
C: Metal wear particles at off-crossed polars. D: metal wear particles showing the
Kerr Effect halos at the edge of the particles when viewed with crossed polarized
light. The polars are very slightly off-crossed so that the particle outlines can
still be seen.
