Agglomerated Soot from an Industrial Fire and House Dust Under the Microscope

Agglomerated Soot and House Dust

The black at left center is a collection of agglomerated soot from an large plumbing warehouse fire. The glass fiber may be from the fire though its exposure to heat was relatively low as is shown by the small small miniscus of resin on the fiber near its center. This patch of resin indicates that the fiber was from blanket insulation. The adhearing soot indicates that the fiber was exposed to moving air. The other particles are from the outside as well as the inside of this home. This was from an environmental tapelift collected in a home a few hundred meters (a little over 200 yards) away from the fire. The other particles include skin flakes, mercerized cotton, starch, natural minerals, etc.
