Detection of Reduced Sulfur

Detection of Reduced Sulfur in Kraft Paper

These nitrogen bubbles indicate the presence of reduced sulfur.

Definition/Function:

A solution of 1% sodium azide, 1% iodine, and 5% potassium iodide is a good reagent for the detection of sulfites, sulfides, thiocyanates, thiosulfates, and organic sulfur containing molecules. A positive result is indicated by the generation of nitrogen bubbles at the sulfur containing site or over the body of the material.
