This is a tapelift sample from a home. Paper fibers are one of the most common indoor
particles.
The insect setae is the yellow fiber running diagonally from the middle upper left to
the lower
right. The attachment is to the left. The setae has very low birefringence and an easily
visible
medula. The paper fibers are the moderately high birefringent fibers in this field of
view. The
The paper fibers seen here include wood fiber and bast fiber. The wood pulp fiber are
the wider
fibers and the two bast fibers, derived from herbaceous plants (flax), are narrow and
are marked
with periodic cross or slash marks called nodes. The two bast fibers cross one another
just to
the right near the tip of the insect setae. Other particles in this view include skin
flakes.
