Paper fiber of this size with significant amounts of sizing normally indicate the presence of a
printer or copy machine near this location. Sizing tends to concentrate on the surface of the paper.
The friction drive wheels of the printer or copy machine apply high tensile loading to the surface
of the paper and the highest loads are under the elastomeric wheels as they deform under pressure in
in contact with the paper. This results in the formation of very short fragments of paper fiber often
coated with sizing. The sizing can be starch, clay, polymer, rosin, or other substance designed to
control the wicking of inks along the length of the individual fibers and to optimize paper quality.
