Open Cell Foam Fragment
The example of foam fragments here were on a tapelift from
an Office. These particles are often misidentified as
glass fiber fragments. When viewed at higher magnification they are easier to
correctly identify. This is an enlarged image of the fragment
viewed with a 10X, NA 0.25 objective. The trilobate cross-section of the particle is
a little clearer. The bright particles in this image are
paper fibers and the film to the right of center is a skin flake

Definition/Function:
Open-cell foam of this type is often used as an air filter medium for low back-pressure
blowers or fans. It can also enter the environment as
degraded foam padding from inside shoes.
