Salt, Palm Canyon Salt Lick

A sample of salt from the Palm Canyon salt lick near Palm Springs, California, was examined as it formed from solution. The first salt to crystallize was calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum). This star pattern is characteristic of this salt.
