Sand, Puako Beach, Hawaii, Hawaii

This grain of olivine is from a sand sample collected on Puako Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is mounted in Cargille Melt Mount 1.68 refractive index medium. An included steam void is bracketed by the scale markings. The dark circle in the void is a condensed water droplet from the volume of steam that was trapped by the crystal as it grew.
