This grain of olivine is from a sand sample collected on
Puako Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is mounted in
Cargille Melt Mount 1.68 refractive index medium. An included steam void is
bracketed by the scale markings. The dark spot in the void is a
condensed water droplet from the volume of steam that was trapped by the crystal as
it grew.
